I've been making cakes

J's cousin B, the one who is very ill, is getting married on the 20th of this month. The wedding will be held at our house, and I'm making the cake. I've been making some test cakes to make sure I am competent to do this. I took some pictures. Check it out -

The pictures above are of the first cake I made. It was for new year's eve.

This is a smaller cake I made for B and M to try. It's a lemon cake with a raspberry filling. The frosting is vanilla buttercream. It got the the seal of approval from them. When J told them I could make it with marionberry instead, B was all over it. I think that's the right decision. The marionberry filling is quite good, but B had specified earlier that he wanted raspberry. He tried a bit of the marionberry, and immediately changed his mind. I'm very happy about that.

The pictures below are of a cake I just made. It's chocolate with chocolate frosting and a raspberry/vanilla frosting filling.

I did some experimenting with different frosting bag tips to see what worked. I think it's fairly clear what didn't. :-(

I like the stars. I also like the smooth frosting, but J isn't much of a fan.

I got the base smooth using one of those sheet metal chopper things. I then put the cake in the refer for 10-15 min to firm the frosting a bit. After that, I smoothed it further by putting a sheet of printer paper on it and "melting" it to a smooth finish by running my warm hand over the paper.

Well, enough cakey goodness for a while. I'll post pictures of future cakes.
